2008: Reflections & Resolutions

31 12 2008

I live on the East Coast, so at the time of writing, 2009 is still a few hours away. As the year winds down, I’ve caught myself thinking about how this year went, and what I did with it.

2008 started out with good footing. We pretty much coasted through the first half of the year, with a couple minor events here and there, nothing too fancy. However, around the time of the Olympics, the ride started to get a little bumpy. Now, limping our way into 2009, we’ve got a slowly-but-surely tanking economy, various outbreaks of violence including the really recent Gaza-Israel incident, and all the usual social problems we Americans face on a regular basis yet still seem to shock us.

That being said, this year didn’t totally suck. Progress was made. The iPhone 3G came out, and with it the App store, one of the biggest and best collection of independent everything. We also had improvements in nearly every field of science, and were that much closer to cures and solutions for life’s problems.

On a more personal note, this year was a transition year for me. I started High School, discovered an interest in writing, rediscovered a passion for a good story, made some new friends, kept most of the old, found an interest in technology, podcasts, and fan fictions, and realized I want to start to steep my life in the way I want to.

So, this year is the first year I’m going to make serious resolutions. This list is basically things I want to do by this time next year, and they are as follows:

  • Learn how to play guitar
  • Learn how to draw
  • Write a lot more
  • Diversify what I write about
  • Start a podcast

So yeah, there they are. It’s nice to write down your goals, so you don’t forget them. In other news, expect a Sonic Unleashed (Wii) ‘review’ by Monday, and the next story’s almost done, but I’m going to go over this one once the rough draft’s done, for quality purposes. Look for major additions to the blog in January!

Well, that’s it for this year. See you on the other side of the year, and here’s to hoping! Good bye, 2008; don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Christmas Audio

24 12 2008

I don’t have any actual content for you on this fine holiday, but I do have a very nice Christmas short story, even if it’s not by me. I give you In The Late December, from Escape Pod. More on them in a couple of days, but here’s a taste for now. Happy Holidays, whatever that holiday may be.

Wii wish you a merry Christmas, and a DSi filled New Year. ;)

Reformatting

12 12 2008

So far on this blog, I’ve written two short stories. With the first one, Singularity, I got about halfway through, school spiked, and I lost interest in it, and had to force myself to finish the rest of it in about a week. Overall, I was glad that it was out of the way, was kind of satisfied with it overall, but school came back to haunt me, so my writing life was put on hold again.

About a month and a half later, over Thanksgiving break, I wrote Split. It took me three days; the idea hit me on Thanksgiving and I wrote about half of it, I almost finished it on Black Friday, and it went up, completed, on Saturday. I liked this one a lot more than Singularity it was shorter, simpler, and more fun to write overall. I haven’t been able to write anything since (legitimately; school spiked the week we came back, and a massive paper sucked up all of my free time this past week).

Since then, I’ve come up with a couple ideas for things, although both more emotion-driven than the past things I’ve posted, so that’s going to be fun to work with. However, during my most recent hiatus, I realized that I need to start writing regularly, or I’m going to stop altogether. So that’s what I’m going to do; I’ll sort out everything I write for, and write for one thing for about an hour (at least) every day. I hope that this will ramp up my productivity. The other things I write for are my blog on Sarcastic Gamer (link), and my thoughts on stuff going on in my life. I haven’t really done any of the latter, and I want to, and I might just post whatever I post on the SG Blog here, and make this my primary publishing site.

So what does that mean for you? Well, basically it means more content is on the way, but it also means more kind of content. This’ll keep you on your toes, but also help me diversify myself, and teach us both something in the long run. Until next time; have fun.
